Osaka Waterway

The project brief was to create alternative sustainable systems of public transportation means. We focused on the city of Osaka, Japan. Our objective was to recreate the vitality that the waterways of Osaka once had by establishing a modern public water transportaion network.

The system consists of automated vessels that the user can step on and off easily. large items of luggage can be easily loaded into the vessels.

The design of the vessel is inspired by the old boats that were once used to move around the canals of Osaka. The visual impression was to be as lightweight as possible and keep a feeling of openness between the land and the sea. The sails of old Japanese boats inspired the lightweight roof that creates a shaded area and shelter from the rain while still keeping the feeling open and light.
